What kind of microphones to professional film studios use?

I'm making a boom mic. Apparently film studio cameras can't record audio, so they attach the microphone to something else. What kind of microphone can I use, and what kind of "something" do they use to capture the audio? Where can I get these and how much do they cost?|||The "something else" is an audio recorder. A decent one (such as the Zoom H2 or H4) can be purchased for about $150-$300. Many audio recorders even come with built-in microphones.

Any microphone can be used for the purpose. But you're better off with a directional microphone with little bass rolloff. Ideally, you should be using a shotgun microphone. A decent one can be purchased for $200-$400, although there are some that are in the $1000s that are sensitive enough to work without a boom.

And don't forget the slate - the slapstick you record at the beginning of each film clip. You can make your own out of two boards and a hinge.
